The elements sulphur and nitrogen have a lot in common. Both complement each other by playing an essential role in protein synthesis. Like nitrogen, sulphur is mineralized by microbial activity at appropriate soil temperature. This is why fertilization of nitrogen together with sulphur is particularly important in early spring. Governed by the Liebig's "Law of the Minimum", nitrogen and sulphur has to be available at the same time. Insufficient sulphur reduces nitrogen uptake. The increased nitrogen use efficiency when nitrogen is fertilized together with sulphur compared to when nitrogen is without sulphur has been shown in many field trials.
